Are these words in the Bible? Paste any sentence, joke, or set of song lyrics into the box above and every word is checked against the King James Version (KJV) as you type. Words that appear in the Bible turn green, words that do not are crossed out, and the result tells you exactly what share of your text is biblical.
Are these words in the Bible? How to check
- Type or paste your text. A single word works, and so do whole paragraphs or the lyrics of a song. The checker reads up to 5,000 words at once.
- Read the colors and the percentage. Each green word appears somewhere in the King James Bible. The bar at the top shows how many of your words made it, for example 9 / 11 words (82%).
- Save a share image. One tap draws your result as a picture with every word marked, ready to post wherever you found the joke.
People also ask “are those words in the Bible” about a screenshot they saw online. Paste the text from it here and you will have the answer in a second, without scrolling through a concordance.
Is it in the Bible? Check a single word
Sometimes you only care about one word. Type it on its own and tap it in the result: you will see how many times it appears in the King James Bible and the first verse where it shows up. Church, for example, appears 77 times, first in Matthew 16:18. If the exact word is missing, the checker looks for a close form and tells you, so you can see that a word is there in its singular or plural even when your spelling is not.
How the checker decides
Every answer to “are these words in the Bible” on this site comes from one word list built from the KJV: all 66 books and 31,102 verses, 790,705 words in total, which reduce to 12,681 different word forms. The rules are simple and the same for everyone:
- Capital letters do not matter. LORD, Lord, and lord are the same word.
- Possessives and contractions count as one word, exactly as printed. God’s is in the Bible 26 times; can’t is not in it at all.
- Singular and plural are different words. Dog appears 15 times, while cats and cat never appear, and the checker does not quietly swap one form for another.
- Numbers, emoji, and punctuation are ignored. Hyphenated words are checked as two words.
The list uses only the KJV, which is in the public domain in the United States (more on how the word list was built). Modern translations word things differently, so a word missing from the KJV can still turn up in the NIV or ESV. Nothing you type leaves your browser: the word list is loaded once and every check runs on your device.
Where “None of these words are in the Bible” comes from
The phrase started as a deadpan reply on Twitter and Tumblr. When someone posted a sentence packed with slang or internet jargon, another user would answer “none of these words are in the Bible”. The joke spread widely in late 2021 and has come back in waves ever since, usually as a screenshot.
In 2026 it turned into a TikTok trend captioned “are these words in the Bible?”: people paste the lyrics of a favorite song into a checker and post how many of the words made it. Some songs score surprisingly high, because everyday words such as love, light, heart, and night are all over the KJV. Others drop fast as soon as a brand name or a bit of modern slang shows up.
Surprising words that are (and aren’t) in the Bible
The KJV translators reached for some colorful vocabulary, and some very ordinary modern words are nowhere to be found. A few results worth trying yourself:
| Word | In the King James Bible? |
|---|---|
| unicorn | 6 times, first in Numbers 23:22 |
| dragon | 19 times, first in Nehemiah 2:13 |
| wizard | 2 times, first in Leviticus 20:27 |
| slay | 117 times, first in Genesis 4:14 |
| cool | 2 times, first in Genesis 3:8 |
| cat | not in the King James Bible |
| dinosaur | not in the King James Bible |
| bible | not in the King James Bible |
| trinity | not in the King James Bible |
Yes, the word bible itself is not in the Bible, and neither is trinity. Slay, on the other hand, shows up 117 times, which makes a lot of modern captions more biblical than they look.
Try it with song lyrics
Paste a verse and a chorus, watch the percentage settle, then tap Save share image. The picture shows your score, every word in green or crossed out, and the address of this site, so friends who see it can ask “are these words in the Bible?” about their own songs. On a phone, the image goes straight to your share sheet; on a computer it downloads as a PNG.
A tip for higher scores: older songs and ballads tend to win, while lyrics full of brand names, places, and slang lose points quickly. Words like yeah, okay, and phone are not in the KJV at all.
Frequently asked questions
How many different words are in the King James Bible, and how do you count them?
This checker counts 12,681 different word forms across all 66 books and 31,102 verses of the King James Version, out of 790,705 words in total. Capital letters are ignored, so LORD and lord are the same word. Possessives and contractions such as God’s are kept as one word form, exactly as printed. Singular and plural are counted separately, so cats and cat are two different words.
Which Bible translation does this checker use?
It uses the King James Version (KJV), the standard text that most printed KJV Bibles follow today. The KJV is in the public domain in the United States. Modern translations such as the NIV or ESV use different wording, so a word that is missing from the KJV may still appear in them.
Why isn’t “cat” in the Bible?
The 66 books of the King James Bible never use the word cat or cats, while dog appears 15 times, starting in Exodus 11:7. Cats are mentioned once in the Apocrypha (Baruch 6:22), which this checker does not include.
Is “unicorn” really in the Bible?
Yes. Unicorn appears 6 times in the KJV, first in Numbers 23:22, and unicorns appears 3 more times. The translators used it for a Hebrew word for a wild ox. Dragon (19 times), wizard (2 times), satyr, and cockatrice are in there too.
Can I check song lyrics?
Yes. Paste the lyrics into the box and the result updates as you type. Long texts are fine: the checker reads up to 5,000 words at once. Use the Save share image button to get a picture of your result that you can post.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The King James word list is downloaded to your browser once, and every word is checked on your own device. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
Can I check just one word, like “is it in the Bible”?
Yes. Are these words in the Bible, or just this one? Type a single word and you will see whether it is in the KJV, how many times it appears, and the first verse where it shows up. If it is missing, the checker also tells you when a close form such as the singular or plural is there.
